Located in Pinson, Alabama, only 15 miles north of Birmingham, the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve’s (TCNP) 466-acre’s are home some of the most stunning and unique beauty found anywhere in the Southeast. Every year, over 130,000 people visit the Preserve to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities including fishing, swimming (national recognized swimming hole), hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing.  In addition to the amazing recreational opportunities, TCNP is also home to 7 federally protected species, making it one of the most critical habitats in the country for conservation and a unique location for environmental education.

For the summer of 2020, the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve has partnered with CAWACO RC&D to establish a summer internship program. We are currently seeking highly qualified and motivated undergraduate students for this position. This internship is an excellent opportunity to train and work at one of Alabama’s most unique nature preserves. The summer internship is especially appropriate for students majoring in Urban Environmental Studies, Biology, Education, History, or any related field. Intern will gain experience and understanding of the principals and practices of environmental education, natural resource management; water quality monitoring; land-use management practices and public policy.
Turkey Creek Nature Preserve interns will be expected to work full-time, for a minimum of eight weeks during the summer of 2020. Compensation for the Summer Internship program is $2,000 per student, which is payable in monthly installments based upon ongoing successful completion of the program.

Qualifications:
-Applicants must be rising Juniors or Seniors undergraduates or recent graduates in good academic standing. Specifically, we are looking for students who are enrolled in a variety of environmentally-related fields, such as environmental education or engineering; environmental studies; teaching degrees in science, biology, or related field; environmental law; or other environmentally-related career paths.

-Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 point scale as of Fall quarter/semester 2019.

-Interns must be able to work independently and as part of a team, be comfortable working with all ages, be willing to work outdoors in summer conditions. be detail-oriented and have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

-Good communication skills and punctuality are vital.

-Interns should be capable of working in adverse conditions which may include: biting insects, summer heat, navigating steep terrain on foot, and occasional physical labor.

-Interns must work a minimum of 35 hours per week.

-Applicants are responsible for their own housing and transportation.

General Responsibilities Include:
Assist with outdoor educational programs and public events
Conduct general preserve stewardship, which may include: trail and facility maintenance, landscaping, invasive species eradication, biological surveys, water quality monitoring, GIS mapping, and grounds keeping.
Interns will have the opportunity to conduct a guided independent project.
